自（じ）分（ぶん）と友（とも）達（だち）など、比（くら）べる人（ひと）たちの年（ねん）齢（れい）が同（おな）じであることです。

Two or more people are equal in age, such as you and a friend.

EXAMPLES

私（わたし）と山（やま）田（だ）さんは、同（おな）い年（どし）です。
Yamada and I are the same age.
同（おな）い年（どし）の友（とも）達（だち）と、一（いっ）緒（しょ）に旅（りょ）行（こう）しました。
I traveled with a friend who is the same age as me.

USAGE

Use と for the person compared, as in 友達と同い年, and の before a noun, as in 同い年の人. It does not mean having the same birthday.
