Facing a particular direction

顔（かお）や体（からだ）、建（たて）物（もの）の正（しょう）面（めん）が、あるほうを向（む）いています。「窓（まど）が海（うみ）に向（む）かっている」のように使（つか）います。

A person’s face or body, or the front of an object or building, faces a particular direction, as in 窓が海に向かっている (“the window faces the sea”).

Heading toward a place

行（い）きたい場（ば）所（しょ）を目（め）指（ざ）して、そちらへ進（すす）みます。「今（いま）、駅（えき）へ向（む）かっています」のように使（つか）います。

To travel or move in the direction of a destination, as in 今、駅へ向かっています (“I’m heading to the station now”).
EXAMPLES

  1. 建（たて）物（もの）の入（い）り口（ぐち）は大（おお）通（どお）りに向（む）かっています。

    The entrance of the building faces the main street.

  2. 今（いま）、駅（えき）へ向（む）かっています。

    I am heading to the station now.

  3. 選（せん）手（しゅ）たちはゴールに向（む）かって走（はし）りました。

    The athletes ran toward the goal.
USAGE

使うときのポイント

Mark the direction faced or the destination approached with に or へ, as in 海に向かう (“face/head toward the sea”) and 駅へ向かう (“head to the station”).
