   I became acquainted with a local person while traveling.

   3友（とも）達（だち）の紹（しょう）介（かい）で彼（かの）女（じょ）と知（し）り合（あ）ったそうです。

   I hear they got to know her through a friend’s introduction.

Use と for the person and で for the place or opportunity, as in 学校で人と知り合う.
